AI can do a lot of things right now. It can compose a plausible layout in a minute. It can render a hundred variations of a button before you finish your coffee. It can produce work that would have taken a small team a week two years ago. All of that is true and the floor is going to keep moving up.

None of that is the same as someone having made the thing.

Making is a decision-shaped act. Someone chose. Someone said no to a hundred alternatives that were technically competent. Someone sat with the discomfort of not knowing yet. Someone let a specific taste, a specific point of view, a specific hand, land on the surface. When you look at something a person made, you feel that person is in the room. When you look at something generated, you feel the absence.

Users can tell.

The difference isn’t always about pixels. It’s about specificity. The way a real hand refuses to smooth over the thing a machine will always smooth over. The corner left rough on purpose. The type that’s quietly wrong for the category and quietly right for the product. The joke buried in the empty state. The word another designer would have edited out. Those are the traces of a person having authored the thing.

This is the part I think we’re at risk of losing.

The pressure to compress, produce faster, ship the AI-assisted output, cut the review cycle. All of that is real, and I’m not going to argue with the economics. What I will argue with is the idea that design leadership can stay above this. That we can let the team optimize for velocity and trust the taste to hold. Taste doesn’t hold on its own. Taste is a person, and a person has to be the one making the thing.

Which is what the job is right now.

Not refusing the tools. The tools are useful and getting more useful. Making sure a person has actually authored the thing. Not approved it. Not directed it. Authored it. Put their name on it in a way that means: I chose this. I sat with it. I said no to the alternatives. It looks like this because of me.

At Daydream, this is what we’re trying to hold. Designers on our team are redesigning the PDP by hand. Others are composing the storefront framework, choosing the vocabulary that describes what we’re building, sitting with the specific decisions instead of shipping the first plausible answer. The AI is in the loop, and the loop is fast, but a specific person is at the end of every decision. That specificity is what compounds.

The made thing compounds. Everything else averages out.
