Thinking Is the Job

I’ve been thinking about what design is actually for in an AI-era team. Not what it was. What it is, right now, when AI made the artifacts cheap.¶
You see the same pattern across teams in 2026. Someone has the strategy. Someone has the brief. Someone has the constraints. The job is to render. With AI tools the render takes hours instead of weeks. The shape of the role becomes: receive instructions, hit submit, deliver pixels. Faster than ever, quieter than ever.¶
A lot of teams are about to make the same misread. Designers make pretty things. AI can make pretty things. Therefore the role shrinks. The designer’s job becomes a service: write the brief, get the pixels.¶
The pretty things were never the job.¶
The job is teaching people how to think.¶
Most decisions in a company get made fast. Someone has an idea, the room reacts, the loudest person wins, the work ships. The good designers I’ve worked with were the friction against that. The range operators who slowed the room down by moving across altitudes inside a single conversation. They asked the question nobody asked. They refused the easy version. They took the half-formed idea and forced it through a process until it was something a stranger could use.¶
That process is the work. It isn’t the Figma file. It isn’t the prompt. It’s the conversation that surfaces what’s actually being decided. The cut that kills the part that doesn’t earn its place. The patience to wait until the answer is right instead of fast.¶
Anyone can have taste. Everyone thinks they do. AI gives everyone a feedback loop that confirms it. The prompt comes back beautiful enough to feel like proof. The skill isn’t the taste. The skill is what happens after the first answer: holding it up to the light, killing the parts that don’t work, finding the thing that’s actually there.¶
That’s a discipline. It takes time. It takes someone in the room whose entire job is to take that time. Without that person, the team ships its first thought. Polished, on-brand, and forgettable.¶
AI accelerates the knee-jerk. The designer’s job is the opposite: slow it down until the idea is actually worth shipping. Restraint is the product.¶
The companies that figure this out will keep their senior designers and keep getting better. The ones that don’t will hire AI tooling instead of design judgment, watch their work get faster and flatter, and wonder why the product stops feeling like anything.¶
Taste is cheap. Everyone has it. Thinking is the job.¶
